Ceres Power SOFC Commercialization, £103 M Raise, Multi-GW Centrica Deal, and Doosan Production Start (2025-2026)
SOFC Commercial Scale, Ceres Power Licensing Model Matures
The Ceres Power licensing model is transitioning from research and development agreements to commercial reality, evidenced by key manufacturing partners initiating mass production and the company securing its first royalty revenues. This pivot validates the asset-light strategy, shifting the focus from technology development to enabling partners to manufacture and sell at scale. The primary application driving this adoption is the acute need for clean, reliable on-site power for the energy-intensive data center sector.
From R&D to Royalty Revenue
- Between 2021 and 2024, Ceres’ revenue was primarily derived from one-time engineering fees and technology transfer payments as partners evaluated the technology.
- The strategic inflection point occurred in July 2025, when licensee Doosan Fuel Cell commenced mass production of SOFC systems, which unlocked the first royalty revenues for Ceres in the same year. This marked the first material validation of its high-margin, recurring revenue model.
- The company’s business transformation program, launched in September 2025, was a direct response to this shift, designed to sharpen commercial focus and align resources with supporting licensee production and sales growth rather than pure R&D.
Data Centers Drive Adoption
- The AI boom has created a significant power bottleneck for data centers, creating an urgent market for grid-independent power solutions that Ceres’ technology is positioned to address. This market driver was a key factor in Goldman Sachs’ “Buy” upgrade in October 2025.
- Ceres’ patented Steel Cell® technology offers high electrical efficiency of over 60% and up to 85% in combined heat and power (CHP) mode, making it a compelling alternative to traditional grid power for baseload applications.
- Unlike competitors such as Bloom Energy, which operates at higher temperatures, Ceres’ lower-temperature SOFC (450–630°C) allows for the use of lower-cost materials, potentially accelerating mass-market adoption as manufacturing scales.

Ceres Power Execution Test, 2028 Profitability Hinges on Licensee Sales
The next 18-24 months are a critical execution test for Ceres Power. The company’s ability to reach its 2028 profitability target depends almost entirely on the manufacturing output and sales success of its licensees, particularly Doosan, Weichai, and new partners like Centrica.
Signals for Success
- If licensees announce significant end-customer contracts, especially in the data center or industrial CHP sectors, it will be the strongest signal that the model is working. Watch for quarterly reports detailing the growth in royalty revenue.
- The signing of one or two new major licensees in Europe or North America would validate the global appeal of the model and de-risk the dependency on existing partners.
- Positive operational data from the first commercial deployments by Doosan and Centrica, confirming high efficiency and reliability, will be crucial for securing follow-on orders.
Potential Stalling Factors
- These could be happening if there is a persistent lack of announcements regarding new customer orders from licensees, suggesting they are struggling to penetrate their target markets.
- A slowdown in the build-out of manufacturing capacity by partners or any pushback of production timelines would be a major red flag, directly delaying royalty streams.
- Should competitors like Plug Power or Bloom Energy announce a string of large-volume data center deals, it could indicate that Ceres and its partners are losing the race in this critical market segment.
